Description
Key Characteristics
- Fin Spread: The caudal (tail) fin spreads to a 180-degree or wider half-moon shape when flaring.
- Size: Grows up to roughly 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) in length.
- Appearance: Features thick, raised, reflective metallic scales (often silvery-white, golden, or cream) along the body, paired with vibrant yellow or butter-yellow fins.
- Labyrinth Organ: Possesses a specialized organ that lets the fish breathe oxygen directly from the air at the water’s surface.
Care and Behavior
- Solitary Living: Must be kept alone because male bettas are extremely territorial and will fight other males to the death.
- Water Flow: Needs a gentle filter because heavy, flowing fins make swimming difficult in strong currents.
- Diet: Feeds on high-quality betta pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
