Description
Overview & Origin
- Family: Serrasalmidae, making them close relatives of piranhas and pacus.
- Origin: Native to the tropical and subtropical rivers, streams, and flooded forests of South America, particularly the Amazon and Paraguay River basins.
- Common Species: Most commonly refers to Metynnis argenteus, though other varieties like Metynnis hypsauchen and red hook silver dollars are also common in the aquarium trade.
Size and Appearance
- Size: Adults typically grow to between 5 and 8 inches (13 to 20 cm) long.
- Appearance: Uniform silver coloration, laterally compressed (flat from side to side), with occasional faint red or dark markings on the throat, fins, or behind the gills during breeding.
- Lifespan: Can live up to 10 years with proper care.
Aquarium Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Require a minimum of 50 to 75 gallons (approx. 190 to 280 liters) because they need ample swimming room.
- Social Behavior: Peaceful and skittish; they must be kept in shoals or groups of at least 5 to 6 individuals to reduce stress and shyness.
- Diet: Primarily herbivorous. They eat sinking algae pellets, leafy greens (like spinach or lettuce), and flake foods. They will readily eat and shred live aquarium plants, so hardy artificial or real plants like Java Fern and Anubias are recommended.
- Water Parameters: Prefer a water temperature of 75–82°F (24–28°C) and a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0–7.0. A secure, tight-fitting aquarium lid is essential because they are strong jumpers when startled.
