Description
Overview and Origins
- Name: “OB” stands for Orange Blotched, a genetic trait borrowed from Mbuna cichlids.
- Origin: Captive-bred hybrid created by crossbreeding male Aulonocara (peacock) cichlids with female Mbuna cichlids; they do not exist naturally in the wild.
- Appearance: Each fish features a one-of-a-kind speckled pattern of orange, black, white, blue, or yellow markings.
Tank Care and Requirements
- Water Temperature: Maintain between 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C).
- Water Chemistry: Thrives in warm, slightly basic, alkaline pH water typical of Lake Malawi habitats.
- Diet: Omnivorous/carnivorous; feed a mixed diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, brine shrimp, and krill.
- Temperament: More aggressive and unpredictable than pure peacock cichlids due to their Mbuna heritage, though they can still be kept with other medium-sized Lake Malawi haplochromines and peacocks.
