Description

Physical Characteristics
  • Size: Grows up to 3.5 to 4 cm (about 1.5 inches).

  • Appearance: A transparent or clear body with a prominent, elongated bright red nose/rostrum that can actually regenerate if broken.

  • Sexual Dimorphism: Males often feature distinct lateral red lines down their bodies, while females tend to be larger, stronger in red coloration on the nose, or more purely transparent.

Natural Habitat & Distribution

  • Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, spanning a wide range from Japan and Fiji through Indonesia to Madagascar and Southeast Asia.

  • Environment: Found primarily in brackish estuaries, coastal mangroves, marshes, and lower freshwater river stretches.

Aquarium Care & Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum of a 10 to 20-gallon tank recommended for a small group.

  • Water Parameters: Temperature between 22°C–26°C (72–80°F), pH levels of 6.5–7.8. While they tolerate freshwater well, they naturally hail from brackish environments and appreciate stable conditions.

  • Behavior: Peaceful, active swimmers that are notable climbers and notorious jumpers—a secure aquarium lid is a must.

  • Diet: Omnivorous scavengers that excel at eating various types of algae (like hair algae) and biofilm, supplemented by sinking shrimp pellets or blanched vegetables.

Breeding

  • Difficulty: Extremely difficult and uncommon in home aquariums.

  • Larval Stage: While females carry green eggs, the hatched fry require a planktonic phase in brackish or saltwater environments to survive and mature.
