Description
Overview
- Scientific Name: Caridina multidentata (formerly Caridina japonica).
- Origin: Native to streams and rivers in Japan and Taiwan.
Appearance and Size
- Look: Translucent or light gray bodies marked with broken reddish-brown or grayish-blue lines and dots, plus a thin white stripe down the back.
- Size: Females grow up to 2–3 inches (50–75 mm); males are smaller at 1.5–2 inches (35–50 mm).
- Lifespan: Usually 2 to 3 years, but can reach up to 5 years with great care.
Tank Care and Requirements
- Water Temperature: 18–28 °C (64–82 °F).
- Water pH: 6.5–7.5 (tolerates up to 8.0).
- Copper Warning: Highly sensitive and extremely averse to copper (found in some fish medications and plant fertilizers).
- Diet: Consumes hair algae, biofilm, detritus, and leftover fish food. Supplement with algae wafers or blanched vegetables like zucchini.
