Description
Overview and Origin
- Name Origin: The word “plakat” comes from the Thai term for fighting fish. Traditional plakats were bred for endurance and combat in historical ring fights.
- Appearance: Unlike long-finned varieties like the Veil-tail or Halfmoon, male plakats feature short, robust fins, elongated ventral fins, and a sharply pointed anal fin.
- Health and Activity: Because they lack heavy, elongated fins, male plakats are far more active, energetic, and resilient against ailments like fin rot.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: They need more active swimming space than long-finned bettas; a minimum of 5 to 10 gallons is recommended.
- Water Conditions: They thrive in warm, stable water (75–80°F) with a gentle filter flow and plenty of live plants or hiding spots. Adding botanicals like almond leaves helps mimic natural soft-water conditions.
- Diet: As strict carnivores, they require high-protein pellets, insect sticks, or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia.
- Temperament: Like all male Betta splendens, they are territorial and must be kept singly, though short-finned variants can sometimes tolerate peaceful, non-nippy community fish in larger, well-planted setups.
