Description
Physical Characteristics
- Crown-like Fins: The webbing between the fin rays on the tail (caudal), dorsal, and anal fins is reduced, making the rays stick out like a crown or set of spikes.
- Ray Variations: Variations include single-ray, double-ray, and cross-ray types, depending on how much the fin extensions branch out.
- Size & Color: Males grow up to 6.5 cm (2.6 inches) long and come in vivid colors like red, blue, black, and multicolored patterns.
Care and Requirements
- Solitary Living: Male Betta fish are territorial and must be kept alone to prevent fighting and severe stress.
- Tank Size: They need a heated, filtered aquarium holding at least 5 gallons of water.
- Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature between 24°C and 27°C (75°F to 81°F) with neutral to slightly acidic pH.
- Diet: Feed a high-protein diet of specialized pellets, frozen foods, or live brine shrimp rather than plant-based flakes.
Health Watch
- Fin Rot: Their elaborate fins make them prone to bacterial issues if water quality drops. Regular partial water changes help prevent illness.
