Description
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Features oversized pectoral fins that resemble elephant ears (also called “Dumbo” bettas) alongside a signature caudal fin that spreads a full 180 degrees when flared.
- Size: Grows to an average length of about 2.5 to 3.5 inches (6.4 to 8.9 cm).
- Lifespan: Typically lives between 1.5 to 3 years with proper care.
- Behavior: Possesses a labyrinth organ allowing it to breathe atmospheric air. Males are intensely territorial and must be housed alone, whereas females tend to be more peaceful.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Requires a minimum of 4 gallons, though 20 gallons is recommended if keeping compatible peaceful tankmates.
- Water Parameters: Prefers a temperature range of 72°–82°F and a neutral pH around 6.8–7.5.
- Water Flow: Needs slow or gentle filtration because their large fins make them weaker swimmers who struggle in strong currents.
- Diet: Carnivorous; thrives on high-protein micro-pellets, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp.
