Description
Key Characteristics:
- Biology: They use iron-based haemoglobin (instead of copper-based haemocyanin) to transport oxygen, which gives their blood and soft body a distinct red colour. They possess a lung rather than gills and lack an operculum (a protective “trapdoor” covering the shell opening).
- Size & Shell: They grow up to about 2.5-3.5 cm in shell diameter. Their shell is planisphere (coiled in a single flat plane like a ram’s horn).
Care and Ecology in Aquariums:
- Diet: Scavengers that feed on algae, detritus, biofilm, and decaying plant matter.
- Reproduction: They are simultaneous hermaphrodites that lay gelatinous egg clusters on hard surfaces or plants. They can multiply rapidly if excess food or algae is present in the tank.
- Tank Mates: Peaceful companions for freshwater shrimp and non-aggressive fish, though they are preyed upon by specialised species like assassin snails or certain loaches.
