- Appearance: Males feature vivid iridescent or reddish dorsal and tail fins with greenish bodies, while females are more subtly colored.
- Special Adaptation: They possess a modified pelvic fin that forms a suction disc, allowing them to anchor themselves in swift currents and climb wet rocks.
Habitat & Water Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum of an 80 cm (approx. 30 inches) long aquarium.
- Water Parameters: Temperature between 20–28°C (68–82°F), a neutral to slightly alkaline pH of 6.5–7.5, and clean, highly oxygenated water.
- Setup: Requires a mature, well-established tank with smooth rocks, gravel, and strong water flow to encourage natural biofilm and algae growth.
Diet & Behavior
- Diet: Specialized grazers that feed on benthic micro-organisms, biofilm, and various types of algae. They generally do not thrive on standard processed commercial flake foods.
- Temperament: Peaceful bottom-dwellers, though males can become mildly territorial during breeding. They do well with other peaceful, similarly-sized stream inhabitants.
