Description
Overview & Description
- Scientific Name: Stigmatogobius sella / Stigmatogobius sadanundio (frequently traded and referenced under knight goby variants).
- Size: Grows to approximately 5 to 9 cm (2 to 3.5 inches).
- Appearance: Features a pale or whitish-gray body marked with dark spots, and distinctive blue-tinged or dark-spotted dorsal fins. Males typically display longer fins and a deeper gray-blue hue, while females tend to be smaller and more yellowish.
- Native Range: South and Southeast Asia, spanning from India and Sri Lanka to Indonesia and the Indo-Malayan zone.
Habitat & Tank Requirements
- Water Parameters: Prefers a temperature of 20–26°C (68–79°F), a pH level between 7.0 and 8.5, and hard, alkaline conditions (10–25 dGH).
- Salinity: Thrives best in brackish water (or hard, alkaline fresh water), with many aquarists recommending small additions of marine salt.
- Tank Setup: Requires a minimum tank size of around 68 liters (18 US gallons) equipped with a tight lid, sandy or fine gravel substrate, dim lighting, and multiple rocks or caves to establish territories.
Behavior & Diet
- Temperament: Bottom-dwelling and moderately territorial, particularly toward other bottom-dwellers or their own species. Keeping them in a proper group with at least 2–3 hiding places per fish helps reduce aggression. Avoid housing them with very small, slow, or long-finned tankmates.
- Diet: Omnivorous and unfussy; accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods, granules, flakes, and vegetable matter or algae.
