Description
Overview & Appearance
- Classification: Despite its common name, it is actually a species of Danio and is closely related to the Celestial Pearl Danio.
- Size: Reaches a maximum length of about 2 to 3 cm (1 to 1.2 inches).
- Appearance: Features dark bluish-green vertical stripes across a tan or orange-tinted body, bright orange-red fins, and a small dark spot at the tail base.
Natural Habitat & Aquarium Care
- Origin: Endemic to the shallow, weed-rich waters and margins of Lake Inle in Myanmar.
- Water Parameters: Prefers slightly alkaline and cooler water, with a pH of 7.0–8.0, hard water (200–350 ppm), and temperatures between 68°F and 76°F (20–24°C).
- Tank Setup: Requires a 15-gallon long tank minimum, featuring dense live plants, dim lighting, dark substrate, and a gentle filter flow to mimic its natural environment.
- Behavior: Known to be a bit shy. Most hobbyists on Reddit and fishkeeping communities agree they thrive best and feel more secure when kept in larger groups (shoals of 8 to 10 or more) with peaceful tankmates like nano fish, shrimp, and snails.
- Diet: Omnivorous micro-predator; accepts high-quality micro-flakes, tiny granules, and small live or frozen foods like baby brine shrimp and daphnia.
