Description

Overview & Description
  • Scientific Name: Boraras brigittae (family Danionidae)

  • Common Names: Chili rasbora, mosquito rasbora

  • Origin: Endemic to blackwater streams, peat swamp forests, and pools in South West Borneo, Indonesia.

  • Size: Extremely small, growing only to about 1.5–2 cm (0.6–0.8 inches).

  • Appearance: Vibrant rusty-orange to bright red body featuring a distinct dark or black horizontal lateral stripe ending near the tail. Males are smaller and display more intense red coloration, while females have rounder bellies and a slightly duller tone.

Aquarium Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum of 10 gallons (approx. 38 liters), perfect for nano aquascapes.

  • Water Parameters: Prefers temperatures between 72–82°F (22–28°C) and a pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.5, ideally in soft, slightly acidic water. They thrive in tannin-rich blackwater setups.

  • Behavior: A peaceful, active shoaling species. They should be kept in groups of at least 8 to 10 (preferably more) to feel secure and display their best colors.

  • Diet: Micro-predators. They require very fine foods like micro-pellets, cyclops, baby brine shrimp, or crushed flakes due to their tiny mouths.
