Description
Overview and Origin
- Scientific Name: Derived from species in the genus Poecilia (such as Poecilia sphenops and Poecilia latipinna).
- History: The solid black variety was developed through selective breeding in the 1920s and 1930s, and has been a staple in the aquarium hobby since.
- Size: Males grow up to about 6 cm (2.4 inches), while females grow slightly larger, up to 8 cm (3.2 inches).
Tank Care and Requirements
- Water Temperature: Keep between 24°C and 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- Water Chemistry: Prefer hard, alkaline water (pH 7.2–7.7). They are sensitive to soft water, rapid parameter shifts, and poor filtration.
- Salt Addition: Many hobbyists add a small amount of aquarium salt (around 1 tablespoon per 10 liters) to mimic their natural brackish tolerance and keep them healthy.
- Diet: Omnivorous with a strong preference for plant matter. They eat algae, spirulina, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods.
Breeding
- Reproduction: They are livebearers, meaning eggs hatch internally and females give birth to free-swimming fry.
- Brood Size: Can produce up to 100+ young per birth cycle.
