Description
Overview and Appearance
- Scientific Name: Derived from common molly species like Poecilia sphenops or Poecilia latipinna.
- Body Shape: Breeders selected a shortened, curved spine trait. This compresses the body cavity and creates the round “balloon” look.
- Size: They grow up to about 3 inches (7.6 cm) long, making them smaller than standard mollies.
- Colors: They come in black, white, orange, gold, and Dalmatian (marbled) patterns.
Care and Health
- Type: They are livebearers, meaning females give birth to free-swimming live young instead of laying eggs.
- Swimming: Due to their compressed skeletal structure, balloon mollies often have clumsy or poor swimming abilities.
- Lifespan & Sensitivity: They tend to have a shorter lifespan and higher sensitivity to poor water quality, bacteria, and soft water compared to regular mollies. They require stable tropical freshwater conditions, sometimes with a small addition of aquarium salt.
