Description
Key Characteristics & Appearance
- Tail Fin: Characterized by a fixed genetic mutation that elongates the upper and lower rays of the caudal fin while leaving the middle rays normal, creating a forked, harp- or lyre-shaped tail resembling a Greek lyre.
- Colors & Patterns: Available in many color morphs, including solid black, gold, copper, orange, and salt-and-pepper/Dalmatian patterns.
- Size: Grows to about 2 to 4.5 inches (5–11 cm) in length.
- Lifespan: Typically lives 3 to 5 years with proper care.
Care & Aquarium Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum of 15 to 30 gallons, ideally in a taller aquarium to accommodate active swimming.
- Water Temperature: 70°F – 82°F (21°C – 28°C).
- pH Level: 7.0 – 8.5.
- Water Hardness: 10° to 25° dH; they can adapt to freshwater or lightly brackish water.
- Temperament: Peaceful and social; best kept in small groups (such as a ratio of multiple females to one male).
Breeding Note
Lyretail mollies are prolific livebearers (giving birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs). In males, the modified anal fin (gonopodium) is also elongated due to the lyretail trait, which can sometimes reduce mating efficiency compared to standard short-finned strains.
