Description
Overview and Origin
- Scientific Name: Caridina logemanni (originally a mutation derived from wild bee shrimp, classified under the Caridina genus).
- History: Discovered in Japan in 1996 by breeder Hisayasu Suzuki as a red color mutation of black bee shrimp.
- Size: Small dwarf shrimp growing to about 2 to 3 cm (roughly 1 inch) in length.
- Lifespan: Around 1.5 years under stable conditions.
Grading System
- Grades: Graded from C-grade up to SSS-grade.
- Pattern: Lower grades (C) feature more red and messy markings, while higher grades (SS to SSS) feature dense white coloration, specialized head markings (like Mosura or Hinomaru), and minimal red. Prices increase exponentially with higher grades.
Tank Requirements and Care
- Water Parameters: Require softer, slightly acidic water with a stable pH between 5.5 and 6.9, and low carbonate hardness.
- Temperature: Optimal range is 68°F to 74°F (20°C to 24°C). High temperatures increase mortality.
- Behavior: Active foragers that graze on biofilm, algae, and detritus.
- Tank Mates: Best kept in a species-only tank or with very small, peaceful fish (like Clown Killifish or Endlers) to prevent larger fish from preying on delicate shrimplets.
