Description
Overview and Description
- Appearance: It has a translucent, silver-toned body with a thin horizontal black line running down its side.
- The Tail: Its forked caudal fin features distinctive black and white or yellow markings. The tail opens and closes in a scissor-like motion while swimming or resting, which gives the fish its common name.
- Size: In the wild, they can grow up to 15 cm (6 inches), though aquarium specimens are usually smaller.
- Lifespan: They live for about 5 to 8 years with proper care.
Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: Because they are fast swimmers and reach a moderate size, they need a spacious tank of at least 4 feet long (around 50-75 gallons or larger for a proper group).
- Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature between 22°C and 25°C (72°F to 77°F), soft to medium hardness, and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).
- Environment: Provide a well-filtered environment with open swimming space at the top level, alongside planted edges and driftwood for security.
Behavior and Diet
- Social Needs: They are peaceful shoaling fish and should be kept in a group of at least 6 individuals to reduce stress.
- Temperament: Highly active top-dwellers that get along well with other peaceful community fish of similar size.
- Diet: Omnivorous. They readily accept high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like daphnia and bloodworms.
