Description

Physical Appearance
  • Eggspot: Females have a visible white spot (the ovipositor or eggspot) near their ventral fins on the abdomen.

  • Body Shape: They feature a rounder, thicker belly compared to the slimmer male body.

  • Fin Length: Their fins are typically shorter and less flowing, though long-finned female varieties exist.

  • Beard: Their gill membrane (“beard”) is smaller and stays hidden under the gill plate when relaxed, unlike the prominent display of a male.

Behavior and Tank Life

  • Temperament: They are generally less aggressive than males, but still possess territorial instincts.

  • Sororities: Female bettas can sometimes live together in groups called “sororities” (usually 4 to 6 or more), but this requires a large tank (20 gallons or more) with plenty of hiding spots to prevent bullying.

Care Requirements

  • Water Temperature: Maintain a steady warmth between 76°F and 82°F using an aquarium heater.

  • Tank Size: Provide at least a 5-gallon tank (or larger for multiple females) with gentle filtration.

  • Diet: Feed a protein-rich diet of high-quality pellets supplemented with frozen or live brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
