Description

Overview & Appearance
  • Scientific Name: Desmopuntius rhomboocellatus

  • Size: Grows up to 5.5 to 8.8 cm (about 2.2 to 3.5 inches).

  • Markings: Features a reddish base color with greenish-brown backs and silvery sides, patterned with dark, rhombus-shaped (diamond-like) flank markings.

  • Lifespan: Around 5 to 7 years with proper care.

Natural Habitat

  • Location: Endemic to western, central, and southern Kalimantan in Indonesia (Borneo), including river basins like the Kapuas and Barito.

  • Environment: Found in slow-moving blackwater peat swamps with acidic water (pH 3.0–7.0), stained dark by decaying organic leaf litter and dense marginal vegetation.

Aquarium Care

  • Temperament: Peaceful and social; unlike some of their more aggressive barb relatives, they are non-fin-nippers and do well in community setups.

  • Social Needs: Best kept in a school or group of at least 6 to 10 individuals.

  • Tank Setup: Requires a minimum 20-gallon tank featuring soft, acidic water, dim lighting, and a dark substrate with plenty of plants or driftwood to mimic their natural blackwater habitat.

  • Diet: Omnivorous micro-predator that accepts high-quality flake food, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods like daphnia or brine shrimp.
