Description

Appearance and Overview
  • Body: Features an elongated, deep black body with an iridescent green sheen and a vivid, forked bright red tail (caudal fin).

  • Size: Grows to about 5 to 6 inches (13–15 cm) in length.

  • Lifespan: Lives 5 to 8 years in captivity.

Conservation Status

  • Wild Status: Listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and nearly extirpated in the wild due to dam construction, pollution, and habitat destruction.

  • Aquarium Trade: All specimens found in the modern pet trade are commercially captive-bred.

Aquarium and Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Requires a minimum of 30 to 55 gallons, though larger tanks (72+ gallons) are better for managing territory as they mature.

  • Behavior: Highly territorial and aggressive toward its own species and similar-looking bottom-dwellers; best kept as a solitary specimen unless housed in a very large, heavily planted tank.

  • Tank Setup: Needs plenty of hiding spots (rocks, caves, driftwood) and a secure lid because they are known jumpers.

  • Water Parameters: Thrives in tropical temperatures between 72–79°F (22–26°C) and a pH of 6.5–7.5.
