Description
Overview & Physical Traits
- Scientific Name: Derived mainly from Xiphophorus maculatus (southern platyfish) and Xiphophorus variatus (variable platyfish), which are frequently hybridized in the aquarium trade.
- Size: Grow to a maximum length of about 6.0 to 7.0 cm (2.4 to 2.8 inches).
- Appearance: They feature a striking warm golden-yellow body that transitions to fiery orange and red towards the midsection and tail. Many variants exhibit darker scale edges, creating a distinct “crosshatch” pattern reminiscent of a pineapple’s skin, while others feature black-fringed “needle” tails.
- Lifespan: Around 3 to 5 years with proper care.
Habitat & Water Requirements
- Temperature: 72–82 °F (22–28 °C).
- pH Level: 6.8 to 8.0.
- Water Hardness: 10–28 dGH.
- Tank Setup: Prefer planted aquariums with open swimming areas in the center.
Behavior & Reproduction
- Temperament: Peaceful, active community fish that do well with other non-aggressive species.
- Diet: Omnivorous; they eat flakes, algae, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms and daphnia.
- Breeding: Prolific livebearers that yield 20–50 fry monthly. Adults can be cannibalistic toward their young, so floating plants or a separate breeding tank help fry survive.
