Description

Overview & Physical Traits
  • Size: Grows to about 5.9 to 7 cm (2.3 to 2.8 inches) in length.

  • Appearance: Features a pale, tan-to-olive body with dark mottled spots or patches and a subtle iridescent sheen. Males tend to be smaller with slightly longer dorsal and pectoral fins than females.

  • History: Discovered by Charles Darwin during the Beagle expedition in the 1830s, it became one of the earliest captive-bred aquarium fish, with breeding recorded in Paris as early as 1878.

Behavior & Care in Aquariums

  • Temperament: A peaceful and sociable fish that thrives in community aquariums.

  • Social Needs: Must be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals to mimic natural shoaling behavior.

  • Parameters: Prefers cooler or moderate tropical temperatures ranging from 16 to 24°C (61 to 75°F) and does poorly in excessively warm water.

  • Diet: Omnivorous bottom-feeder; accepts sinking pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms. Soft sand or smooth round gravel is recommended to protect their sensitive sensory barbels.

  • Unique Trait: Like other corydoras, they can gulp air at the water surface to utilize their intestines for oxygen absorption, and they can produce soft clicking sounds via their pectoral fins during distress or courtship.
