Quick Facts & Appearance
- Size: Grows up to 2.25–2.5 inches (approx. 6.5 cm).
- Lifespan: 5 years or more with proper care.
- Temperament: Extremely peaceful, social, and active.
- Appearance: Features an iridescent green or blue-grey body accented by a bright orange-red “blaze” along the back and dorsal fin, plus a dark shoulder patch.
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons (they need ample footprint to swim).
- Schooling Requirement: Must be kept in a group or shoal of at least 5 to 6 individuals to feel secure and display natural behavior.
- Substrate: Soft sand or very smooth, rounded gravel is essential. Sharp or coarse substrates will erode and damage their sensitive barbels (whiskers).
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72–78 °F (22–26 °C)
- pH: 6.5–7.8
- Water movement: Moderate with high oxygenation.
- Special Behavior: Like other Corydoras species, they are intestinal air-breathers and will occasionally dart to the water’s surface to gulp air.
Diet & Tank Mates
- Diet: Omnivorous scavengers. They accept sinking catfish pellets, sinking wafers, and high-quality frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. Do not rely on them to survive solely on leftover food.
- Compatible Tank Mates: Peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, gouramis, livebearers, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid large or aggressive fish that might bully them or view them as prey.
