Description
Overview & Appearance
- Size: Grows up to 15 cm (6 inches) in standard length.
- Name Origin: Named for the two dark spots on each side of its body plus its eye, which counts as the third spot (though the spots are often masked by the opaline marble pattern).
- Labyrinth Organ: Possesses a specialized organ allowing it to breathe atmospheric air from the water surface.
- Sexual Dimorphism: Males feature long, pointed dorsal fins, while females have shorter, rounded dorsal fins.
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 to 35 gallons (115–130 liters) to accommodate their adult size and territorial tendencies.
- Water Parameters: Temperature between 72°F–82°F (22°C–28°C) and pH levels ranging from 6.0 to 8.0.
- Environment: Prefers slow-moving water, dense live planting, and line-of-sight breaks (driftwood or rocks) to establish territories.
Behavior & Tank Mates
- Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive; males can be quite competitive with each other and may nip at slower-moving or long-finned fish.
- Ideal Companions: Best kept with active mid-to-top dwelling community fish of similar size; avoid tiny nano fish or delicate long-finned species like male bettas.
Diet
- Omnivorous: Thrives on a balanced mix of high-quality algae-based flakes or pellets, alongside meaty frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
