Description
Overview and Appearance
- Size: Grows to a maximum length of about 4 to 4.5 cm (roughly 1.5 inches).
- Eyes: Features a striking, reflective neon-blue or blue-green upper iris that catches and shimmers under aquarium lighting.
- Body: Slender and translucent with a silvery or yellowish-blue tint and clear fins. Males often display slightly longer, more pointed fins.
- Lifespan: Typically lives for 2 to 5 years.
Habitat and Distribution
- Native Range: Widespread across slow-moving freshwater streams, rivers, swamps, and floodplains in West and Central Africa, stretching from Senegal to Sudan and Chad.
- Natural Environment: Found in shallow, heavily vegetated savanna waters providing plenty of cover.
Aquarium Care
- Behavior: An active, peaceful mid-to-surface water shoaler that thrives best in groups of six or more.
- Tank Requirements: Needs a minimum tank size of around 20 to 60 liters well-planted with subdued lighting and a secure lid, as they are known jumpers.
- Water Parameters: Prefers a temperature of 22–26°C (72–79°F) and a pH between 6.5 and 7.5.
- Diet: Omnivorous micro-predator; accepts small crushed flakes, frozen foods, and live cyclops or baby brine shrimp.
