Description
Appearance and Biology
- Body Shape: Long, slender, and eel-like, growing to about 3 to 4 inches (7–10 cm) in length.
- Coloration: Pinkish-orange body marked with 10 to 15 vertical dark brown or black bands.
- Features: They have four pairs of barbels (whisker-like organs) around their mouth and a small, defensive subocular spine beneath each eye. They lack visible scales on their head and have reduced scales on their bodies, making them sensitive to certain medications and water quality.
- Lifespan: Up to 14 years in a well-maintained aquarium.
Habitat and Behavior
- Origin: Native to slow-moving streams, forest rivers, and shallow waters in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and surrounding regions.
- Social Life: Highly peaceful, docile bottom-dwellers that prefer to live in groups of five or more. Keeping them solitary stresses them out.
- Activity: Primarily nocturnal or crepuscular (active at dusk/dawn), spending daylight hours burrowing or hiding under leaf litter, driftwood, and rocks.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum of 20 to 23 gallons recommended for a small group.
- Substrate: Fine, soft sand is essential because they love to burrow and will injure their delicate barbels or skin on rough gravel.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75°F – 84°F (24°C – 29°C)
- pH Level: 5.5 – 7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Diet: Omnivorous scavengers. They readily accept sinking pellets, algae wafers, and high-protein foods like frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
