Description
Description & Appearance
- Koi Markings: Bright red, orange, or gold patches concentrated near the head, dorsal fin, and tail fin (sometimes featuring a distinct red nose).
- Tuxedo Pattern: A dark blue, slate, or solid black half-body or rear-body colouration that contrasts sharply with the vibrant head and fins.
- Size: Grows to an average adult size of 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm), with males typically smaller and more colourful than females.
Tank Requirements
- Aquarium Size: Minimum of 20 litres (about 5 gallons) for a small group, though larger is always better.
- Water Temperature: 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).
- Water pH: 6.8 to 7.8 (neutral to slightly alkaline).
- Water Hardness: 100 to 200 ppm.
- Care Level: Easy, making them well-suited for prepared beginners.
Diet & Temperament
- Diet: Omnivorous. They readily accept tropical fish flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and mosquito larvae.
- Temperament: Peaceful and active top-dwellers.
- Ideal Tank Mates: Other peaceful community fish such as platies, bristlenose plecos, small tetras, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid aggressive species or fin-nippers (like tiger barbs or aggressive bettas) which can damage their large pectoral fins.
