Description

  • Name Origin: “Kohaku” translates from Japanese as red and white, borrowed from the traditional Kohaku koi variety.

  • Coloration: Features vibrant red or orange markings over a milky-white, semi-transparent body. Variants like the “Wag” or “Wagtail” include black-shaded fins.

  • The “Sword”: Adult males develop a distinct, elongated lower extension on their caudal (tail) fin resembling a sword, growing up to 14–14 cm total length.

  • Size: Females grow slightly larger and fuller-bodied, reaching 12–16 cm, while males reach around 10–14 cm including the sword.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum aquarium capacity of 112 liters (approx. 30 gallons) to accommodate a active group.

  • Water Parameters: Prefers hard, alkaline water with a pH of 7.0–8.5 and general hardness (GH) of 10–30 °dGH. Temperature should range between 22–28 °C.

  • Behavior: Hardy, peaceful, and active. Best kept in a community tank in a group with a higher ratio of females to males to reduce aggressive chasing.

  • Diet: Omnivorous; readily accepts flakes, pellets, live, and frozen foods.
