Description
Overview & Appearance
- Coloration: Selective breeding causes the standard vertical black stripes to widen and spread over the body, creating an iridescent bottle-green, bronze, or near-black appearance.
- Size: Grows to about 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) long in home aquariums.
- Lifespan: Lives up to 5 to 7 years with proper care.
Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum of 20 gallons (75 liters) to accommodate an active schooling group.
- Water Parameters: Maintain a pH of 6.0–7.5, water hardness of 5–19 dGH, and temperatures between 70–78°F (21–25.5°C).
- Environment: Provide open swimming space in the middle to lower levels of the tank, supplemented by dense live or artificial plants along the edges.
Behavior & Tank Mates
- Social Needs: Must be kept in a school or shoal of at least 6 individuals. Smaller groups increase stress and lead to intense fin-nipping.
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive. They redirect their sparring energy toward each other within a proper school.
- Incompatible Fish: Avoid slow-moving or long-finned species like Bettas or Angelfish, which easily fall victim to fin-nipping.
