Description
Overview & Description
- Scientific Name: Hyphessobrycon columbianus
- Origin: Native to slow-flowing creeks and streams in the Río Acandí basin of northwestern Colombia.
- Size: Grows up to 6.5–7 cm (2.5–2.8 inches).
- Lifespan: 3 to 5 years with proper care.
- Appearance: Silver-grey body with a neon turquoise-blue stripe along the top, bright red/crimson fins, a black-edged anal fin, and whitish tips on the dorsal and caudal fins.
Tank Requirements & Care
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons (approx. 110 liters) to accommodate their active swimming habits and schooling needs.
- Water Parameters: Temperature of 24–26 °C (75–79 °F), neutral to slightly acidic pH (5.5–7.0), and soft to medium hardness.
- Environment: Appreciates heavily planted tanks with driftwood and open swimming space, though they may nibble on soft-leaved live plants.
- Diet: Omnivorous; easily accepts high-quality flakes, granules, frozen foods like brine shrimp, and bloodworms.
Behavior & Tank Mates
- Social Structure: Shoaling fish that should be kept in groups of 6 to 10 or more. Keeping them in numbers helps curb fin-nipping.
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive for a tetra; they can be boisterous and prone to minor bullying or fin-nipping if kept in too-small groups.
- Compatible Tank Mates: Best paired with fast-moving, robust community fish. Avoid slow-moving or long-finned fish (like fancy guppies or angelfish) that can become targets for nipping.
