Description
Overview and Origin
- Origin: Developed in Japan by crossbreeding Chinese lionhead goldfish.
- Nickname: Celebrated as the “king of goldfish” for its majestic and distinctive appearance.
- Lifespan: Lives for 8 to 15 years or longer with proper care.
Physical Appearance
- Body Shape: Features an egg-shaped, deep body reaching 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) in length.
- No Dorsal Fin: Lacks a top (dorsal) fin completely, with a smooth, highly arched back.
- Head Growth: Develops a fleshy raspberry-like head growth called a wen as it matures.
- Tail: Has a short double tail attached to the body at a sharp 45-degree angle.
- Colors: Found in red, white, red-and-white, calico, black, and rare bi-color combinations.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Needs a spacious tank of at least 30 gallons since they have a heavy bioload and deep bodies.
- Water Flow: Prefers a gentle current because their missing dorsal fin makes them slower, more delicate swimmers.
- Water Parameters: Requires cool, clean water with regular partial water changes to prevent diseases like fin rot or ich.
- Diet: Thrives on a balanced diet of sinking pellets, flakes, and high-protein live or frozen foods like bloodworms and Daphnia.
