Description
Overview & Appearance
- Body Shape: Extremely short, round, and spherical, closely resembling a ping-pong or golf ball.
- Scales: Features a genetic mutation causing the outer layer of each scale to thicken and dome outward, catching the light like tiny pearls.
- Size: Can grow up to 6 to 8 inches (15–20 cm) in length under proper care.
- Lifespan: Often lives for 10 years or more with a well-maintained habitat.
- Origin: Developed in China and Japan through centuries of selective breeding.
Care & Health Requirements
- Swimming Ability: Because of their compact, round body and tight internal organ arrangement, they are clumsy, slow swimmers and waddle when they move.
- Tankmates: Best kept in peaceful aquariums without aggressive or fast-swimming fish that might outcompete them for food.
- Water Conditions: Prefers clean, cool water with temperatures generally kept above 55°F (13°C) and stable pH levels.
- Health Vulnerabilities: Highly prone to swim bladder disorders and digestive issues due to their compressed anatomy; sinking pellets and soaked foods are often recommended to prevent them from gulping surface air.
