Description

Overview & History
  • Origin: Developed in China and later introduced to Japan.

  • Name: The Japanese name Oranda-shishi-gashira translates to “Dutch lionhead,” as early specimens were thought to have arrived via Dutch trade ships.

  • Lifespan: Typically lives 10 to 15 years, and up to 20 years with proper care.

  • Size: Grows between 5 to 12 inches (12 to 30 cm) in length.

Physical Characteristics

  • The Wen: A prominent crown-like growth on top of the head that develops fully as the fish matures over 1 to 2 years.

  • Body Shape: Features a deep, rounded, egg-shaped body and a long, flowing, quadruple-lobed caudal (tail) fin.

  • Colors: Appears in various colors including red, white, red-and-white (Red Cap), black, calico, chocolate, and blue.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Requires a minimum of 20 gallons for a pair, with larger volumes needed as they grow.

  • Water Parameters: Prefers temperate water ranging from 59°F to 82°F (15°C to 28°C) with high filtration and gentle water flow.

  • Tank Decor: Avoid sharp decorations or rough objects that can scrape or infect the sensitive wen.

  • Diet: Omnivorous; thrives on sinking pellets, vegetables, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp.

  • Tank Mates: Best kept with other slow-moving, peaceful fancy goldfish, as they cannot compete for food with fast swimmers.
