Description
Overview & Types
- Mbuna: Rock-dwelling fish known for intense territorial aggression, bright patterns, and algae grazing. Popular genera include Maylandia, Melanochromis, and Pseudotropheus.
- Haplochromines & Utaka: Open-water or sand-dwelling predators and filter-feeders, including the clever sleeper cichlids like Nimbochromis which use ambush tactics.
- Peacocks (Aulonocara): Highly prized aquarium fish known for striking metallic blues, yellows, and oranges.
Biology & Behavior
- Mouthbrooding: Females hold fertilized eggs and fry safely inside their mouths for several weeks until the young can swim independently.
- Aggression & Social Structure: Most species maintain strict hierarchies. In home aquariums, overcrowding is sometimes used intentionally to disperse aggressive behavior among many individuals.
Aquarium Requirements
- Water Parameters: Require hard, alkaline water with a pH of 7.5–8.4 and temperatures between 77–84 °F (23–29 °C).
- Setup: Tanks need robust filtration and extensive rockwork to form caves and visual barriers that reduce territorial fighting.
