Description
Overview and Appearance
- Zebra Danio: Features a silvery-gold body adorned with five horizontal, iridescent blue-purple stripes that run from the gills straight to the tail. Males tend to be more torpedo-shaped with extra gold tones between the stripes, while females have rounder, silvery bellies.
- Golden Danio (Gold Zebra Danio): Displays a warm, translucent golden-yellow or whitish-gold base body color. While the distinct dark blue striping is often reduced, faded, or washed out into a softer overall golden appearance due to a recessive genetic color variation, they share the identical body structure.
Size and Lifespan
- Size: Both varieties grow to a maximum length of about 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 cm).
- Lifespan: Typically live between 2 to 5 years in a well-maintained home aquarium.
Care and Habitat Requirements
Because they are the same species, their care requirements are identical:
- Temperament: Peaceful, highly active, and fast-swimming.
- Social Needs: They are shoaling fish that must be kept in groups of at least 5 to 6 individuals to feel secure and display natural behavior.
- Tank Size: A minimum 10- to 20-gallon aquarium with plenty of open swimming space.
- Water Parameters: Thrive in temperatures between 68°F and 75°F (20°C to 24°C), a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.5), and moderate water flow.
- Diet: Omnivorous; accept high-quality tropical fish flakes, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp.
