Description
Overview and Origin
- History: Bred in 1982 at the Saitama Prefectural Fisheries Experiment Station in Japan (following suggestions from Crown Prince Akihito) and independently developed around the same time in the United States by Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery.
- Naming: Named “butterfly koi” by Randy LeFever because their graceful, sweeping fins resemble butterfly wings.
- Appearance: Features finnage that exceeds standard koi ratios by 500% to 1000%, slender frames, and long barbels (whiskers). They come in various metallic and traditional koi colors.
Care and Lifespan
- Lifespan: Typically lives between 25 and 35 years under proper conditions.
- Environment: Hardy fish that thrive in outdoor ponds requiring about 1,000 gallons of water per fish and a minimum depth of 3 feet.
- Health Needs: Their long fins make them more vulnerable to fin damage, nipping, and rot, meaning they require exceptionally clean water and regular parasite checks.
