Description
Overview & Origin
- Native Habitat: South America, specifically the Amazon, Orinoco, and Guiana Shield river basins.
- Wild Environment: Slow-moving waters, flooded forests, and areas with dense submerged branches or vegetation.
- Species: Three main wild species exist: Pterophyllum scalare (the most common), Pterophyllum altum, and Pterophyllum leopoldi.
Body and Appearance
- Shape: Deeply compressed, flat bodies shaped like a triangle or disc with long, elegant dorsal and anal fins.
- Size: Can reach up to 6 inches in length and up to 10–12 inches in height.
- Patterns: Natural forms feature vertical dark stripes for camouflage, while captive breeding has produced marble, gold, albino, and pearlscale varieties.
Care in Aquariums
- Water Parameters: Temperatures of 76°F to 84°F and slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0 to 7.0).
- Tank Size: A minimum of 40 to 55 gallons is recommended due to their tall vertical growth.
- Behavior: Generally peaceful with medium-to-large community fish, but can show territorial behavior during breeding.
