Description
Overview and Description
- Appearance: Features a golden-yellow or translucent albino body with characteristic red-tipped fins, differing from the standard silver metallic form.
- Size: Grows up to 7 to 8 cm (about 3 inches) in length.
- Lifespan: Lives for 5 to 6 years under proper care.
- Origin: Native to the Río de la Plata basin in South America, including parts of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Tank Care and Compatibility
- Schooling: Highly active and social; must be kept in a group of at least 5 to 8 individuals to curb aggression.
- Tank Size: Requires a minimum aquarium length of 80 cm, roughly equivalent to a 20-gallon or 81-litre tank.
- Water Parameters: Thrives in temperatures ranging from 15°C to 28°C (60°F–82°F) and a pH level between 5.5 and 8.0.
- Temperament: Known as active fin-nippers. Avoid housing them with slow-moving or long-finned tank-mates.
- Plants: They have a strong tendency to consume and destroy live aquarium plants, so artificial plants or robust species are often recommended.
Diet
- Omnivorous: Readily accepts standard flake foods, sinking pellets, frozen treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp, and vegetable matter.
- Feeding tip: Adding regular vegetable content (such as spirulina flakes or blanched greens) helps satisfy their grazing habits and reduces plant-nipping.
