Description
Description & Appearance
- Body: Deep, egg-shaped body with metallic scales and flowing, quadruple (double) tail and anal fins.
- The “Cap”: A distinct red raspberry-like growth restricted to the top of the head (the wen), resembling a tiny living hat.
- Size: Grows between 20 to 31 cm (8 to 12 inches) in length.
- Lifespan: Lives 15 to 20+ years with proper care.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum of a spacious 1.2-meter (4-foot) aquarium or large filtered setup due to heavy waste output.
- Water Parameters: Tolerates temperatures between 10–28 °C (ideal range 18–24 °C), with a pH of 7.0–8.0.
- Maintenance: Requires efficient heavy-waste filtration and weekly partial water changes to prevent bacterial infections on the delicate wen.
- Tank Mates: Peaceful and social, but should be kept with other fancy goldfish or slow-swimming tank mates to prevent food competition or damage to their fins and wen.
- Diet: High-fiber sinking pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods (like daphnia or bloodworms) to avoid buoyancy and digestive issues.
