Description
Overview and Identification
- Scientific Name: Trichogaster chuna (formerly Colisa chuna)
- Size: Grows to about 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5.5 cm)
- Appearance: Males feature a vibrant red or reddish-orange body, while breeding males develop a dark blue-black throat and lower belly. Females are typically a paler yellow or silvery-brown.
- Common Confusion: There is a consensus among aquurists on Reddit that fish sold commercially as “red honey gouramis” are sometimes misidentified thick-lipped gouramis (Trichogaster labiosa), which grow larger and can be more aggressive. True red honey gouramis are a selective captive-bred color variant (often called sunset or fire honey gouramis).
