Description
Overview
- Size: 3 to 4 inches (8–10 cm)
- Lifespan: 1 to 2 years typically (up to several years with ideal care)
- Temperament: Peaceful, shy, and colonial
- Diet: Filter feeder (microscopic particles, detritus, powdered fry food, green water)
Appearance & Behavior
- Fan Hands: Instead of standard claws, they feature specialized, feathery fan-like appendages. They use these fans to catch micro-food suspended in fast-moving water currents.
- Coloration: Ranging from brown, green, and cream to reddish hues, they usually feature a distinct pale or creamy-yellow stripe running down their back. They can also change color slightly to match their surroundings.
Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum of 20 gallons (approx. 75–100 liters) to ensure adequate micro-food availability.
- Water Flow: High/moderate water flow or a dedicated powerhead/sponge filter setup is essential so they have a strong current to feed in.
- Water Parameters: Temperature of 72–82°F (22–28°C), pH of 6.5–7.5.
- Safety: Must be kept in copper-free water (copper is toxic to invertebrates)
