Description
Freshwater Blue Neon Goby (Stiphodon atropurpureus)
- Common Names: Philippine neon goby, blue neon dwarf goby.
- Origin: Native to fast-flowing, clear tropical streams in Asia, including the Philippines, Taiwan, southern China, and Japan.
- Appearance: Small size (growing up to 2 inches / 5 cm) featuring vibrant electric-blue horizontal stripes, particularly bright on territorial males.
- Diet & Behavior: Obligate algae scrapers and biofilm grazers. Their elongated guts require high amounts of natural biofilm rather than heavy prepared fish food.
- Aquarium Care: Require high water flow, strong lighting to promote algae, smooth gravel or rocks instead of sand, and stable water temperatures around 22–27°C.
Marine Neon Goby (Elacatinus oceanops)
- Origin: Found in the Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean, Florida, and Belize.
- Behavior: Famous mutualistic cleaner fish that removes ectoparasites from larger reef clients.
- Aquarium Care: Hardy reef-safe fish that readily accepts commercial foods and reproduces in captivity.
