Description

Overview and Appearance
  • Size: Grows up to 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inches).

  • Lifespan: Typically lives 3 to 5+ years in captivity.

  • Appearance: Features a tetragonal, greyish body that darkens toward the tail, marked by distinctive vertical black bars behind the gills and an extensive, flowing black anal fin.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons (75 liters) to accommodate a proper group.

  • Water Temperature: 68°F to 79°F (20°C to 26°C).

  • pH Level: 5.8 to 8.5 (prefers soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water).

  • Setup: Thrives in well-planted aquariums with subdued lighting and plenty of open swimming space.

Behavior and Diet

  • Social Structure: Peaceful schooling fish that should be kept in groups of six or more to reduce nipping.

  • Tank Mates: Avoid keeping them with long-finned or slow-moving species like Bettas or Angelfish, as they can be prone to fin-nipping.

  • Diet: Omnivorous; they readily accept flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
