Description
Physical Appearance
- Size: 3 to 7 cm (1.2 to 2.8 in) long, making them noticeably larger than male guppies (1.5 to 4 cm).
- Coloration: Dull grey, brown, or olive, lacking the bright ornamental fins and colorful patterns seen in males.
- Markings: Often feature a dark “gravid spot” near the rear/anal fin area, which darkens when they are pregnant.
Behavior and Reproduction
- Livebearers: Retain eggs internally and give birth to fully formed, free-swimming live young (fry) rather than laying eggs.
- Prolific Breeding: Can store sperm from a single mating for up to eight months to produce multiple broods.
- Litter Size: Yields anywhere from 2 to over 200 fry per birth depending on the female’s size and age.
- Lifespan: Averages about 2 years.
