Tropical Setup Guide

Setting up your first aquarium can seem complicated, but breaking the process down into simple steps makes it much easier. Before bringing your first fish home, make sure you have everything you need to create a safe, stable and healthy environment.

Use this beginner aquarium setup checklist to help you get started.

1. Choose the Right Aquarium

Start with an aquarium that is suitable for the fish you want to keep. A larger aquarium can often be easier for beginners to maintain because water conditions tend to be more stable.

Consider:

  • Aquarium size and capacity
  • Available space in your home
  • The adult size of your chosen fish
  • The number of fish you intend to keep
  • Whether you want a tropical, coldwater or marine aquarium

Avoid choosing fish first and then trying to fit them into an unsuitable tank. Plan your aquarium around the needs of the fish.

2. Choose a Suitable Aquarium Stand

An aquarium can be extremely heavy when filled with water, gravel, rocks and equipment. Always use a suitable aquarium stand or cabinet designed to support the weight of the tank.

Make sure the aquarium is positioned on a stable, level surface and away from direct sunlight, radiators and areas where it could be easily knocked.

3. Install an Aquarium Filter

A reliable aquarium filter is essential for maintaining good water quality. The filter removes waste particles and provides a surface where beneficial bacteria can develop.

Choose a filter that is appropriate for the size of your aquarium and the fish you intend to keep.

4. Add an Aquarium Heater

If you are setting up a tropical freshwater aquarium, you will need an appropriate aquarium heater to maintain a stable water temperature.

Use an aquarium thermometer to monitor the temperature regularly. Different fish species have different temperature requirements, so always check the recommended range for your fish.

5. Add Aquarium Gravel or Substrate

Choose an aquarium-safe substrate that suits your fish and the appearance you want to create.

Gravel can provide a natural-looking base for your aquarium and can also help anchor certain plants. If you are keeping bottom-dwelling fish such as Corydoras, choose a substrate that is suitable for their sensitive barbels and natural behaviour.

Always rinse suitable gravel or substrate thoroughly before adding it to the aquarium.

6. Add Aquarium Plants and Decorations

Aquarium plants, rocks, wood and other decorations can transform your fish tank into an attractive underwater environment.

Live aquarium plants can provide shelter and hiding places while helping create a more natural environment. Artificial plants can also be used where appropriate.

Make sure all decorations are specifically designed for aquarium use and do not have sharp edges or substances that could harm fish.

7. Fill the Aquarium and Treat the Water

Fill the aquarium with tap water and use a suitable aquarium water conditioner to remove or neutralise chlorine and other substances that may be harmful to fish.

Follow the instructions provided with your water conditioner and allow the equipment to operate correctly.

8. Start the Aquarium Filter and Heater

Once the aquarium is filled, switch on the filter and heater and check that everything is working correctly.

Make sure water is circulating properly and that the heater is maintaining the required temperature.

This is also a good opportunity to check for leaks and make sure all electrical equipment is safely positioned.

9. Cycle the Aquarium Before Adding Fish

One of the most important steps for a beginner aquarium is cycling the tank.

A new aquarium does not initially contain enough beneficial bacteria to process the waste produced by fish. During the aquarium cycling process, beneficial bacteria become established within the filter and help convert toxic ammonia and nitrite into less harmful nitrate.

Do not rush this stage.

Use an aquarium test kit to monitor water parameters and make sure the aquarium has completed its cycle before adding fish. Adding fish too soon can expose them to dangerous levels of ammonia and nitrite.

10. Test Your Aquarium Water

Regular water testing is an important part of responsible fish keeping.

Beginner aquarium owners should become familiar with testing parameters such as:

  • Ammonia
  • Nitrite
  • Nitrate
  • pH
  • Water temperature

The exact water conditions required will depend on the fish you intend to keep.

Testing your aquarium water allows you to identify potential problems before they become serious and helps you understand how your aquarium is developing.

11. Introduce Fish Slowly

Once your aquarium is fully established and water parameters are suitable, you can begin adding fish.

Avoid adding a large number of fish at once. Introducing fish gradually gives the aquarium’s biological filtration system time to adjust to the additional waste.

Choose compatible species and make sure the fish you purchase are suitable for your aquarium’s size, temperature and water conditions.

12. Acclimatise New Fish

When bringing new fish home, do not simply release them straight into the aquarium.

Fish need time to adjust to the temperature and water conditions of their new environment. Follow an appropriate acclimatisation process and introduce them carefully to minimise stress.

Keep the aquarium lights low during the introduction and give your new fish time to settle into their surroundings.

13. Feed Fish Correctly

Overfeeding is one of the most common mistakes made by new fish keepers.

Only provide as much food as your fish can consume within a short period. Uneaten food can break down and contribute to poor water quality.

Choose a quality aquarium food appropriate for the species you keep and vary the diet where necessary.

14. Establish an Aquarium Maintenance Routine

A healthy aquarium requires regular maintenance.

Your routine should include:

  • Checking the aquarium temperature
  • Testing water parameters
  • Performing appropriate water changes
  • Removing uneaten food and debris
  • Cleaning aquarium glass when required
  • Checking filter operation
  • Inspecting heaters, pumps and other equipment
  • Monitoring fish behaviour and appearance
  • Trimming aquarium plants when necessary

Regular maintenance is much easier than trying to correct a major water-quality problem later.

Before adding your first fish, make sure you have:

☐ Suitable aquarium and aquarium stand
☐ Aquarium filter
☐ Aquarium heater (for tropical fish)
☐ Aquarium thermometer
☐ Aquarium lighting
☐ Suitable gravel or substrate
☐ Aquarium plants and decorations
☐ Water conditioner
☐ Aquarium water test kit
☐ Appropriate fish food
☐ Fish net
☐ Equipment for routine aquarium maintenance
☐ Fully cycled aquarium
☐ Compatible fish selected according to adult size and requirements

A Final Tip for Beginner Fish Keepers

The most important part of setting up an aquarium is not rushing the process. It can be tempting to buy your aquarium, decorate it and add fish immediately, but taking the time to establish the aquarium properly will give your fish a much better start.

Research your chosen species, establish your biological filtration, test the water regularly and introduce fish gradually. With the right preparation, your first aquarium can become a healthy, attractive and rewarding underwater environment that you can enjoy for many years.

Absolutely top notch. Received my order of live fish today. They were so patient with me as the order changed more than once. Service first rate and on arrival one fish was unfortunately DOA. But as soon as I emailed them with a short video it was dealt with. Truly professional and courteous.

Very happy. Love the new extension lots of choice. Always healthy looking fish and great advice. Their prices haven’t really changed since they opened like many other businesses which is great. This store should definitely be recognised more as its a great local business.
