- Native Range: Pethia gelius originates from inland freshwaters in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. Wild Barbodes semifasciolatus hail from Southeast Asia’s Red River basin.

- Conservation Status: Listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
Aquarium Care
- Temperament: Peaceful, active schooling fish that should be kept in groups of 5 or more.
- Water Parameters: Prefers temperatures between 20–25 °C (68–77 °F) for P. gelius, a pH of 6.0–6.5, and moderate water hardness. Gold barbs (B. semifasciolatus) tolerate a wider pH range (5.5 to 8.0).
- Diet: Omnivorous; feeds on small crustaceans, insects, and standard prepared aquarium flakes.
