Description
Overview & Appearance
- Size: Grows up to 4 cm (about 1.5 inches) in length.
- Coloration: Exhibits a bright golden-yellow body with white bellies and striking red or yellow-tipped fins, unlike the silver-green wild type.
- Lifespan: Typically lives for 4 to 6 years with proper care.
- Behavior: Peaceful, active, and social shoaling fish that swim in the top-to-middle layers of the water.
Tank & Care Requirements
- Group Size: Must be kept in a group of at least 6 individuals to reduce stress and encourage natural schooling behavior.
- Temperature: Prefers cool water between 18°C and 22°C (64°F to 72°F) and can tolerate temperatures dropping down to 5°C (41°F), meaning an aquarium heater is usually unnecessary in typical room temperatures.
- Water Parameters: Thrives in a pH range of 6.0–8.0 and water hardness of 5–19 dH.
- Tank Setup: Appreciates a well-planted tank with plenty of open space for active swimming. Good compatible tank mates include peaceful species like Zebra Danios, Corydoras, and Cherry Shrimp.
- Diet: Opportunistic omnivores that readily accept flakes, small pellets, and live or frozen foods like daphnia and mosquito larvae.
