Description
Overview:
- Origin: Native to East Asia, ranging from the Korean Peninsula down to northern Vietnam.
- Size: Reaches about 5.5 to 6.7 cm (2.2 to 2.6 inches) in standard length, though some males grow up to 10 cm (4 inches).
- Labyrinth Organ: Possesses a specialised vascularised organ that allows it to gulp atmospheric air from the surface, enabling it to survive in oxygen-poor or stagnant waters like rice paddies and ditches.
Behaviour and Temperament:
- Aggression: Highly territorial. Males will fight each other and should generally be separated or kept in very large, heavily planted tanks.
- Tank mates: Can live with active, robust fish of similar size, but will attack or attempt to eat slow-moving, long-finned, or small fish as well as shrimp.
- Jumping: Known to jump; a secure aquarium lid is required.
Care and Habitat
- Temperature & Hardiness: Exceptionally durable; they tolerate cool or subtropical unheated water as well as warm tropical temperatures.
- Aquarium Size: Minimum 50 litres gallons is recommended for a single specimen or pair, and 80+ litres for community setups.
- Diet: Carnivorous predators; they require a high-protein diet including bloodworm, Brine shrimp (Artemia) and other high protein foods.
- Reproduction: Bubble-nest builders where the male constructs the nest, cares for the eggs, and fiercely guards the free-swimming fry.
